"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a key snag: I also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated admirers have openly coveted the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals repeatedly depict them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"And thus all is invited to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics follow departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international following.

But the band will forever be their primary priority.

"We have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
